Radiate the Right Amount of Heat with a Radiator Calculator
Does your home feel warm and cosy in the winter? When you come home and the heating's on, does a friendly warm atmosphere greet you? Or are your windows streaming with condensation because it's too hot in the house, or iced up because it's not hot enough to deal with the sub-zero temperatures outside? If your home feels comfortably warm despite the low temperatures outside, then your radiators are probably producing the right amount of BTU. If, on the other hand, your house is either on the low or high side of comfortable, then your BTU output may not be right for the size of your home. If this is the case you need to use a radiator calculator to ensure that you have the right number of radiators at the right size for each room in your property.
BTU, or British Thermal Units as they are also known, are used to measure heat loss. A professional such as an engineer or plumber should be able to do this for you. It's not enough for them only to calculate one room however and use that as the average standard for the entire house. Different rooms have different ideal temperatures, and they also have different variables (some rooms may have double glazing and others not for example) so in order to get the most accurate BTU you must have each room in the house calculated separately.
There are a number of factors that influence the BTU in your home, the most obvious of these being the size of the room. But there others such as the floor level that the room is situated on, whether or not there is wall insulation and even the number of external walls the house has. All of these, plus other variables need to be considered when calculating the BTU and that's where a radiator calculator comes in handy.
Failure to have the right BTU doesn't just make your living conditions less than perfect during a cold spell, it also lowers your energy efficiency. If you are excessively heating your home, you are paying for heat that isn't needed. Either way you are not making the best use of your resources, and although the radiator calculator procedure may seem complicated, a professional can quickly make the calculations for you and tell you what you need to change.
Don't pay for heating that's being wasted, and don't wake up to a freezing cold room. It's not necessary. Have a radiator calculator assess what your home needs in terms of heat and start coming home to a house that's exactly the right temperature whatever the weather is like outside.

What is the historic relative price of heating - oil, natural gas, propane, electric - per btu.?
I'm looking for the average cost per btu to heat with these sources, to convince my friend not to change to propane if he can help it.

natural gas has been the cheapest way to heat historically,,although oil has beat it out now and then when prices dropped low..natural gas runs about $1.30 per therm [100 cu.ft.,,103,000 btu] at the moment... oil is about $2.50 per gallon,,140,000 btu/gal...not sure what propane costs at the moment,would be easy for you to check with a local supplier,,i'll guess its around $2.50/gal,,90,000 btu/gal....heat pumps a little harder to rate,,they are very efficent at 45 deg ambient,but you dont need much heat then...the colder it gets,the less efficient and the less btu output they have,they rely on the built in electric resistance heaters [ part of the indoor unit/air handler] when the outdoor temp is below the "balance point",,those electric heaters are the most expensive form of heat..electric prices in maryland are about 13 cents per kilowatt..electric resistance heaters put out exactly 3400 btu's per kw,,or about $3.90 per 102,000,,although it should be noted that input and output are = for electric heaters,,whereas most oil furnaces are about 80% eff [ 80% of the 140,000 btu/gal goes into the home,,20% goes out the vent/chimney]...natural gas and propane furnaces can be purchased in 80% versions or 90-95% versions,although the 90%+ versions cost about 40-50% more to purchase...if installing oil or propane furnace where there was none before,,the cost of the tank should be figured in....heat pumps cost to run probably averages about 1/2 that of electric resistance heat,,or about 7000 btu per kw of electricity used,,,more $ than that if electric heaters are the backup and outdoor temps are cold enough to use those heaters a lot.......my opinion is the best system is natural gas....if that isnt available,then a heat pump with propane or oil furnace as a backup is preferable.....also,a pellet stove is a good way to supplement an existing heat pump that has electric backup.....dan
